Erastus Root (1773-1846)  was a republican and later Jacksonian politician of Delhi, New York, who won election to several offices in the state of New York including: New York State Assembly, (1798-1802, 1818-1822, 1826-1828, 1830), New York State Senate (1812-1815, 1840-1844), and U.S. House of Representatives: 1803-1805, 1809-1811, 1815-1817, 1831-1833). Openly opposed to slavery, Root became a member of the Whig party in 1838.
