The editors currently define a Van Buren document as one written in his hand, at his instruction, and/or with his signature; a printed speech or public remarks verifiable as his own; and correspondence addressed directly to him. Documents of a routine nature, such as land grants and military commissions, will not be included in the project scope except as examples. Changes to the scope may be necessary as the project progresses.
