MVB to [Charles Edward Dudley], 6 January 182[4]
Washington,
Jan. 6, 1823.
My dear Sir,
I thank you for your last. I read such parts of it as were proper to Mr Crawford, who is fast improving in his health and prospects. Write me often, and let some of your letters be such as it may be proper to show to him. By referring to the Journals of 1800, March, you will find that the Federalists of New York voted down in the Assembly a bill at that time introduced by the Republicans to give the choice of electors to the people. In all the states where they had power they refused to do any act which would throw doubt on the then approaching election. The Tennessee resolutions; what disposition will you make of them? Would it not be best to refer them and let your committee report strong resolutions of the unfitness of making it a Legislature business &c.
My best respects to Mrs D. and Sarah.
Truly yours
M. V. Buren.
