William Van Alen, Power of guardianship, 29 October 1808
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That I, William Van Alen of the Town of Kinderhook & County of Columbia being now about the age of nineteen years, have elected, chosen, and by these presents do elect and choose Cornelius Van Alen Jun of the Town of Kinderh in said county, to be Guardian of my person and estate, real and personal, until I shall attain the age of twenty-one years: And I do hereby promise to be directed and governed by him, in all things touching my welfare; and I do authroise and empower the said Cornelius Van Alen Jr to enter upon and take possession of all my goods, chattels, and personal estate, and all and every my messuage, lands, tenements, hereditaments and premises whatsoever, situate, lying and being in the Town of Kinderhook in said county of Columbia, or elsewhere, whereunto I have, or may have, any right or title; and to secure, improve, let and set the fame; and to receive and take the interest, rents, issues and profits thereof, for my use and benefit, during the term aforesaid, giving and hereby granting unto the said Cornelius my full power in the said premises; and whatsoever he shall lawfully do, or cause to be done in the premises, by virtue thereof, I do hereby promise to ratify and confirm. In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this twenty ninth day of october in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eight
