MVB Senate remarks on St. Lawrence County inhabitants., 24 January 1827


Mr. VAN BUREN, presented the petition of the inhabitants of twenty towns in St. Lawrence County, stating that the duties levied by the British Government on produce carried into Canada, operated as a virtual prohibition to the introduction of commodities of the United States: It also stated, that the navigable part of the River St. Lawrence runs, for fifteen miles, through the Territory of the United States; and prays that such countervailing duties may be imposed as Congress may see fit to authorize.
