MVB Senate remarks on illegal trade, 5 January 1826
Thursday, January 5, 1826.
Mr. HOLMES explained the nature of the bill, which was to prevent an illegal traffic being carried on by the vessels investigating the interior waters of the United States. He entered at some length into the provisions of the various acts which had been passed on the subject of the coasting trade, since the year 1792, and explained the reasons of their being insufficient at the present time. He then moved an amendment which would, he said, more fully embrace the whole subject, after which, on motion of Mr. VAN BUREN, the bill was postponed to Monday next.
