William Coleman

William Coleman (1766-1829) was the editor of the pro-Clinton New York Evening-Post. Originally from Massachusetts, was originally a lawyer and practiced under Aaron Burr before becoming a newspaper editor. Coleman killed a harbormaster in a duel in 1804 after another newspaper editor printed the charge that Coleman had fathered a child with an African American woman, and was savagely attacked in 1819 after publishing a negative story about Democratic politician Henry B. Hagerman.
