Mordecai Manuel Noah | The Papers of Martin Van Buren

Mordecai Manuel Noah (1785-1851) was a politician, diplomat, newspaperman, lawyer, and playwright. Born in Philadelphia to a Sephardic Jewish family, he briefly studied law in Charleston, South Carolina, before receiving an appointment as consul to Tunis in 1813. He founded The National Advocate (New York, NY) in 1817 and was named sheriff of New York City in 1821. He was also a founder of New York University.
