Azariah Cutting Flagg Papers (NNC)
"Letters to Flagg from political figures of the Jackson-Van Buren era. The correspondence is particularly useful in shedding light on the conduct of the national campaign of 1848, when Van Buren ran as an independent candidate for the presidency. There are 90 letters written to Flagg, among which are 41 from Martin Van Buren, 34 from Preston King, and nine from John A. Dix." http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/archival/collections/ldpd_4078761/

We have had a terrible blow here for the last two days which has prevented the Steam Boat for Savannah from leaving here & which will probably detain me until tomorrow. I have received here a letter from Genl Marcy to which I have written an answer which you have doubtless seen. If I could have anticipated that the folks at Washington would have made so decided a push at me & that they... Continue Reading

I send you the list desired by Mr <Cambreleng>. Our friends at Albany have done themselves the highest honor and carried dismay into the administration camp. What think you of the impertinence of Gales. The <illegible> legislature he says have been smuggled into their seats. What will they say to that report? What will the people at large say to it. The poor devil is desperate but... Continue Reading

So far from his certifying that he was in favour of Jackson being an inducement with me to vote for him I would rather do it if I would certify that he would never act with us again. I know him from top to bottom & know there are no sound timbers in wreck. Tell Marcy I... Continue Reading

I send you the whole of Mr Wrights Speech. I hope our friends will immediately have it struck off & certainly circulated. This is the accepted time. Let the catastrophe follow instead of precede its appearance. Write me a long letter. I am struggling hard to get well but succeed but slowly.
My best respects to Mrs. Flagg.

I have spoken to Talcott & recd. for answer that neither he nor Mr Williams go to Plattsburgh but he requested that I should not mention his name as speaking in relation to Mr Williams going. My business here will unavoidably detain me until after the 24th.

What I write to you is so far only confidential that you may in your best discretion communicate it to some of our friends as you think necessary. Mr Wright will soon be with you as well as Keyes & Earl. From them & our immediate friends in Albany, Knower Marcy & Croswell you know I have no secrets. The strong impression previously made on the mind of Mr Adams & his Secretary ... Continue Reading
