Series 5 covers the period of 1 January 1825–3 March 1829. These years witnessed the conclusion of MVB's career in the U.S. Senate, his brief gubernatorial tenure in New York, and his appointment as Andrew Jackson's secretary of state. Other topics of interest include New York politics, southern politics, the formation of the Jacksonian Democratic party, and Van Buren's relationship with his sons.
As of the Series 5 publication date of 30 June 2018, the project contained 720 documents from this period. Of that number, 86 did not fit the editors' parameters for inclusion or were unreadable because of poor microfilm or digital imaging.
